Grassroots Mapping is a series of participatory mapping projects involving communities in cartographic dispute. Seeking to invert the traditional power structure of cartography, the grassroots mappers used helium balloons and kites to loft their own “community satellites” made with inexpensive digital cameras.

To upload imagery for the Gulf Oil Spill mapping effort, use an SFTP program to connect to:

upload.publiclaboratory.org
Username: mapmill
Password: grassygrassy

Place images (not zip files, please) into the “inbox” folder.

You must use the more secure SFTP protocol, not normal FTP.

  • Put files in a folder named with the date, the site name, and your name, like ’2011-8-15-missisippi-longbeach-jeff’
  • Email team@publiclaboratory.org so we can make a backup.
