Grassroots Mapping is a series of participatory mapping projects involving communities in cartographic dispute. Seeking to invert the traditional power structure of cartography, the grassroots mappers used helium balloons and kites to loft their own “community satellites” made with inexpensive digital cameras.

Andrew Ellis and Alexander Wang of the Dynamic Media Institute at Massachusetts College of Art and Design created this short video which has some great footage of balloon flights and some bits of me talking about Grassroots Mapping.

    I like the way this ties dietmar’s notion of relating data in a spacial manner as an act of map making – both of you talking about it in a more participatory context.
